Kinkaku-ji Temple, Kyoto

The original building was constructed in 1397 as the retirement home for a shogun. Later it was converted into a temple. Mishima Yukio's book The Golden Pavilion tells the story of a young monk who was obsessed with the temple and set fire to it in 1950. It was subsequently rebuilt.
